Our Curriculum

We are really excited about our curriculum here at Hedgewood.

Curriculum Intent –Aiming for the best quality of life possible for every young person.

We intend that all our teaching has a direct, positive and lasting impact on each child’s life: this is called social validity.

Our research-based curriculum aims to build those essential knowledge, skills and dispositions identified as most important for learning and which become embedded as good habits and routines, for adult life.

Through nurturing a love of learning, we will build confidence and self-esteem, increase pupil knowledge and understanding of the world, alongside key skills of Independence and communication.

Central to the delivery of our broad, knowledge focused curriculum are positive relationships that allow pupils to feel safe and ready to learn.  There are no short cuts to building positive relationships so we invest significant amounts of consideration, time and training in the creation of staffing systems, curriculum development and the contexts in which learning takes place

Our assessments provide a valuable benchmark for the creation of bespoke learning. This helps us direct pupils to the most appropriate learning as some pupils are better suited to our Functional Life Skills offer (Pre Phase1 & Phase 1) and others to our Formal Academic Skills opportunities (Phase 2 & Phase 3).

  • Ongoing assessment ensures teaching is tailored to specific needs.
  • Learning steps to a fulfilling and happy adult life.
  • Ensuring each pupil has a ‘voice’, namely, an effective method for communicating.
  • Breadth and balance in the curriculum, ensures that pupils’ learning experiences embrace the wider community.
  • Tailored learning that builds on pupils’ interests and promotes independence and personal safety.
