National Autistic Society Accreditation & Information

Hedgewood School has been awarded National Autistic Society accreditation as our school meets the society’s expectations and criteria for specialist schools. This award was made following an NAS review in September 2017.

A copy of the full NAS Report on the school can be found here.

From their review, the NAS panel judged Hedgewood to provide an excellent environment in which autistic young people are able to flourish. They described our young people as having access to high-quality personalised programmes of educational and therapeutic support. The panel commented on our strong commitment to supporting pupils well-being and sensory needs, believing that these are essential for pupils to learn and succeed. The panel noted the school’s strong family support and therapy teams. Comments gathered by the NAS from family questionnaires show that families recognise and value the emphasis Hedgewood places on the well-being of pupils.

The NAS panel also commented on the staff team’s great commitment to ensuring pupils are happy and well supported in their learning. This is achieved through a strong staff training programme and the clear examples of care and positive practice modelled by the very experienced senior leadership team.

The NAS panel judged the commitment, skill and extent to which the school addresses pupils’ emotional well-being to be excellent. This is evident across the whole school, with staff establishing positive and trusting relationships, having substantial benefits for pupils’ learning and development.

The panel concluded that our school has a passion for ensuring that all pupils and, as far as possible, all their families receive the support they need. This impacts very positively on the progress that pupils make. In addition, the school has an ethos of considering and, where appropriate, embracing new approaches to meeting pupils’ needs. Hedgewood has shown considerable flexibility in changing its practice to better meet the needs of an increasingly complex group of young people.
