Enrichment

Enrichment and Extra-curricular Activities Provision:

Our sensory garden, trim track, forest school activities and poly-tunnel provides opportunities for pupils to develop skills based on personal interest and need, as well as working with others to care for the environment. The sensory garden offers experience of smell, texture and opportunities to use gardening skills. Our trim track will support physical development and will meet needs of many of our pupils who use physical movement to support their sensory modulation needs.

We also use the community as an outside classroom. Children may swim at the local sports centre or visit a local library or shops. Older pupils engage in activities such as swimming, cricket and gymnastics throughout the year. In our support and development of independent life skills, and where appropriate, older pupils will undertake independent travel training. We also invite musicians, storytellers and theatre groups into school. An overnight residential is offered to a group of pupils in the summer term.

The community provides a great place in which to generalise and transfer new and emerging skills. We are always interested in increasing the type of experiences that we can expose the children to as well as working with many partners in support of the development of community cohesion. For example, we have a lot of links with local mainstream schools to offer inclusion opportunities to pupils from Hedgewood and neighbouring schools.

In addition to this pupils have access to a number of targeted supportive strategies that support them in overcoming potential barriers to their learning.

Some of these strategies are:

  • Lego Club
  • Music club
  • Choir
  • Reading club
  • Art club
  • Sports
  • Dance club
  • Drama Club
  • Whole school Sports Day and sports-themed events.

Our Extended Schools provision comprises of three strands:

·       After school clubs focused on creative and physical activities;

·       Saturday Study club focused on further developing  English, Maths and Science skills;

·       Saturday Play Buddies focused on the development of social interaction, communication and play skills.
