Hedgewood School is currently designated as a primary school for pupils with autism and complex moderate learning difficulties. Given that 80% of our pupils are autistic we have a proven capacity to share our understanding, especially around communication and the management of learning and behaviour with colleagues in schools, other services and with families.
We have developed an extensive support network to provide our families with understanding, guidance and strategies to improve the quality of life for their children and for the family as a whole. Our Family Support Team have a wealth of information to guide parents to available support networks within the community.
We offer support to mainstream schools to develop inclusive practice [Diminishing the Difference] via staff training as well as providing targeted support for individual pupils.
Hedgewood is a recognised Elklan Communication Friendly school.
We adopt a Total Communication approach across the school which is quality assured by our own SALT team (speech and language therapy).
We are expecting to complete our National Autistic Society accreditation this year.
Hedgewood has an established Outreach Service and has provided support to many schools across the borough. We involve our therapy team in Outreach as and when necessary.
We are a very practical community and seek to maximise learning for our young people both at school and at home.
We are very supportive of initial teacher training and SEND nursing placements.

We also provide targeted support programmes for individual pupils in mainstream schools as well as support for individual teachers to develop their target setting for pupils with additional needs.

As part of our Outreach Service we host visiting professionals at Hedgewood School to observe our practice and our adapted learning environments. This is arranged on a mutual basis between Hedgewood and visiting schools, as well as being part of more formal, borough-wide, SENCO training.
We have established a family and training centre for group training and other events. We also provide twilight and whole-day training sessions, in schools across Hillingdon.
We look forward to continuing to provide support to enhance opportunities for pupils with ASD across the borough.
Pupils are referred to the school following a multi-professional assessment arranged through Hillingdon Local Authority. All our pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or a Statement of Special Education Need. These identify the specific needs of each individual pupil and the provision that he/she will have access to in school. Additional needs, for some pupils, are identified though regular in-school assessments and, if requiring additional input from outside school, are raised at an Annual Review meeting.
Currently all admissions to the school are filtered through the Special Educational Needs Team at the Civic Centre, Uxbridge. Kindly telephone the Team on 01895 558631. They will be happy to clarify the assessment and admission processes. Places at the school are in demand so early contact is advised.
